Although our societal and political views may not exactly align, I'm totally with you where the brainless hate speech and violence are concerned; these are not happy times anyway, but the trends of extremism (from whatever side) and governmental authoritarianism are creating more hate, dissent and chaos every day. Not having the same opinion but being okay with it is no longer an option, it seems.
I find it worrying that people appear to be losing the ability to respect a different point of view, assuming that the ‘other side’ must be evil. Any kind of nuanced thinking is not allowed, especially on the Left.
Our ancestors used to burn each other at the stake for being a Catholic or a Protestant, maybe that mentality never really went away.
I think boredom and absolute inner emptiness are at the bottom of much of this; everything must be fast and exciting, and there’s no place for any nuance in that, because the next thrill must be an even ‘bigger’ one than the latest.
